The short version

Hontoni turns speech into text on your iPhone using an internet speech service. There are no accounts and no advertising. Transcripts stay on your phone, microphone audio is not kept, and you can delete a conversation whenever you like.

Speech and translation

While Hontoni listens, microphone audio is streamed over the internet to Soniox, the speech-recognition and translation service Hontoni uses, and the recognised or translated text is returned to your iPhone. When you import an audio or video file, the audio of the excerpt you choose is sent the same way; the video images are not sent. Hontoni does not process speech on the phone itself, and it does not claim that speech is end-to-end encrypted.

Before the first session Hontoni tells you this and asks for microphone access. Soniox handles the streamed audio under its own terms and privacy policy; the processing region, retention settings and subprocessors will be confirmed and published here before release.

What stays on your iPhone

Transcripts, the names you give speakers, your reading-language and interface preferences, and the audio excerpts you import are stored only on your iPhone. Microphone audio is not recorded or stored. Nothing is synced to a cloud account, because there is no account. Reopening a saved conversation makes no request to any service.

Deleting your data

Delete a conversation in the app and its transcript, speaker names and any imported excerpt are removed from your iPhone. Deleting the app removes everything it stored. Hontoni keeps no copy of your conversations on a server, so there is nothing further to delete.

This website

If you ask for launch updates, the email address you enter is forwarded to us as a single email message through Resend, our email provider, so that we can write to you when Hontoni launches and reply if you write back. It is not added to a marketing list and is not shared with anyone else. Reply to any message from us to have it deleted.

The site uses Vercel Web Analytics, which counts page views and visits in aggregate and sets no cookies. Nothing you type into the form is included in analytics.
